Novi Kurnia is an academic with an interest in the study of cinema and gender. Her doctoral dissertation is on female directors in post-New Order Indonesian cinema. Her master thesis was on the representation of polygamy in Indonesian films. Her other master's thesis was about the political economy of the Indonesian film industry. She was one of the judges for ReelOzInd! Films from 2016 to 2020. Some of her publications: Young, creative, and independent: Cinema Lovers Community (CLC) Purbalingga and its strategies to enliven independent filmmaking in Indonesia in L. Kim & H-K. Lee (eds.), Routledge Handbook of Cultural and Creative Industries in Asia (2019); Consuming Gender and Disability in Indonesian Film, ASPIKOM Journal, Volume 3 number 3 (2017); and "Bercermin dari Kamila Andini dan Mirror Never Lies" in D. Herlina & K. Andini (eds.), Laut Bercermin (The Mirror Never Lies): Sebuah Catatan dan Tafsir Film (2016). She is currently living in Yogyakarta and teaching at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
