KAFEIN as a professional film scholars and researchers association has conducted several research projects. KAFEIN members conduct research as teams and individually on topics relevant to their cross-disciplinary background. KAFEIN has members who have expertise in many field. With these available resources, KAFEIN is open to collaborations with research and cultural institutions interested in film and cinema studies.

In 2019, KAFEIN in collaboration with Bower Group Asia, a research institute working for DISNEY, successfully conducted a series of studies related to the impact of films on the economy. The study involved KAFEIN members with similar research and publication interests. This research has contributed not only to the study of film, but to how film can have a multiplied influence on regional and state economies. Research is conducted with various methods; both qualitative and quantitative, desk and field studies. This research is KAFEIN’s contribution in providing film and economic studies to policy makers. After the elimination of films from the negative investment list, this research can build the promising development of the creative industry in Indonesia.

This research produced five research papers with a variety of topics ranging from the fashion industry, music, tourism, to the economic influence on the micro level in the region and macro at the state level. Here are five publications that will be published in the Journal of Economic Film.

Tito Imanda - BPI - The Indonesian Film Board

     Rhino Ariefiansyah - Universitas Indonesia

Era Muria Endah Sokowati - Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta

Ekky Imanjaya - Film Department, School of Design, Bina Nusantara UniversitydanSazkia Noor Anggraini - Film and Television Department, Faculty of Recorded Media Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta

Eric Sasono - King’s College, University of London

The Indonesian Film Scholars Association (KAFEIN) since 2020 has been collecting and analyzing gender-disaggregated data in the Indonesian film industry. With support from the Japanese government and UNESCO, the project aims to initiate a policy towards gender equality status in the Indonesian film industry. We hope that, the Indonesian film industry will have a continuous gender-disaggregated database for as part of consideration for decision-making. Its series of activities includes the development and dissemination of frameworks and methodologies in two parts. First by creating a conference with the theme “Women in Indonesian Film and Cinema”. The conference is held virtually and could be entirely accessed here.

In addition to the conference, KAFEIN also developed consultations with film and gender stakeholders. In creating gender-disaggregated data, KAFEIN develops a framework by searching data through secondary sources filmindonesia.or.id sites and public catalogs prepared by film schools, festivals, and film professional organizations.

Data shows that especially after the reformation era, women’s involvement has increased even though the percentage is still low. The most involvement of women in nine key professions in film production is no more than 20%. Women who received awards at the Indonesian Film Festival since 1955 are recorded at only 8%. On the contrary, a balanced figure was found in the number of women and men students in colleges with major study programs or film interests. Other data shows that the number of women who completed their studies and received scholarships was even more than men.

Following up gender-disaggregated data, the research also recommends a number of action plans. The recommendation of the action plan are formulated by involving stakeholders in film, form Indonesian Film Board (BPI), the Association of Film Professions, and lecturer at higher institutions with film study programmes. The main objectives of the recommendation formulated as “achieving gender equality in Indonesian cinema” are divided into three goals. The first goal is to improve the working conditions of Indonesian film production and activities to make it ideal, safe and inclusive for all parties. The second goal is to encourage the participation of marginalized gender groups and other marginalized groups in Indonesian film production and activities. The third goal is to bring a gender perspective in filmmaking because balanced representation does not guarantee gender responsive films. At the end of 2021, the results of research and recommendations of this action plan have been successfully published in a book with the title “Towards Gender Equality of Indonesian Cinema: Gender-Disagregated Data Analysis and Action Plan Recommendations.” This book is ready to be accessed by the public for various interests to create an equal and inclusive Indonesian cinema.

In 2021, KAFEIN with the support of UNESCO and the Japanese government implemented two of the action plans that had been established from the gender-disggagregated data collection project in the previous year. Action plans adopted are the drafting of curriculum guidelines for film higher institutions and the preparation of filmmaking training modules for the filmmaker community. Both products are structured with a responsive to Gender and Social Inclusive (GESI) approach. KAFEIN recruited the head of a team of experts on gender and film experts Evi Eliyanah and filmmaker and film educator Panji Wibowo. They were also supported by team members with similar studies and interests, Novi Kurnia, IGAK. Satrya Wibawa and Eric Sasono.

The two products details are:

Guidelines to Integrating GESI Perspectives into the Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Environment of Film Study Programs in Indonesia
This guideline is compiled from a response to fairly balanced women data at film colleges, but on the contrary, still imbalanced in the film industry. This guide is aimed at stakeholders and lecturers who teach in film undergraduate study programs (S1) or other study programs that are equivalent and have the potential to produce graduates to become film workers. This guide provides inspiration on how film study programs can intervene in the formal education of future film workers to be more sensitive and responsive to gender relations inequality and prioritize social inclusion in the industry, their works, and the implementation of other film activities. This has to be done to provide safe and diversity-friendly Indonesian cinema. This guideline is expected to be implemented in the next year with collaboration from the Association of Film and Television Programs (PROSFISI) throughout Indonesia.

Basic Module on Gender Responsive and Socially Inclusive Filmmaking
The preparation of this module is a response to previous research that underlines the minimum participation of women in the Indonesian film industry. This module is structured as a basic knowledge before taking more specific filmmaking training. The preparation of the module considers gender equality and social inclusiveness both in the examples of film, film history, film elements to filmmaking practices. This is important to apply considering that cases of sexual harassment in film production often occur. This module aims to provide a wide and diverse perspective for filmmakers, not just to create a safe space, but a more balanced representation of women. This module will be implemented in training with the filmmaking community with the support of film profession associations. In the next year, the Yogyakarta Film Association has been willing to be involved in realizing equality and inclusiveness in cinema.

KAFEIN as a professional film scholars and researchers association has conducted several research projects.
